What happened?

The Portuguese national team defeated Croatia 2-1 on Thursday (2) at the BMO Field in Toronto, in the round of 16, and advanced to the knockout stage. Perisic opened the scoring in the beginning of the second half, Cristiano Ronaldo tied the game with a penalty, and Gonçalo Ramos scored the winning goal in stoppage time.

The match had a dramatic turn because, after the Portuguese goal, Croatia scored what would have been the equalizer, but had their goal disallowed by VAR.

First Half

Portugal dominated possession in the first half, but had difficulty converting control into clear chances. Croatia started strong in the 2nd minute, when Vlasic crossed low to Budimir, who finished weakly and made it easy for Diogo Costa to defend.

Comeback and drama in stoppage time

The second half started more open and with chances for both teams. In the first minute, Nuno Mendes invaded the area with freedom, but preferred to pass to Cristiano Ronaldo and missed a great opportunity.
