Jorge Jesus has left the door open for Cristiano Ronaldo's return to the Portugal national team, stating the decision rests solely with the player. The manager spoke after a 2-1 win over Norway sealed their place in the Nations League quarter-finals.
The 41-year-old forward, the team's captain and world record holder for goals and caps, left the camp after learning he would not start against Denmark. It was the first time since 2008 that Ronaldo was an unused substitute in a competitive match. The player wrote on social media that "in due course, I will tell the truth to all the Portuguese people about my reasons for leaving the national team, to which I have always been dedicated."
Jesus, who previously managed Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, was clear about the process. "If he wants to, he'll return to the national team," the coach said. "We can talk before the next call-up, but Cris is the one who's going to decide."
The manager recalled that in his first squad announcement, he told the forward he needed him, playing or not playing. "And now I'm saying the same thing," Jesus stated.
Ramos steps up
In the captain's absence, Gonçalo Ramos has scored in all three matches he has started, including the winning goal against Norway in the 79th minute. João Cancelo, who scored the opener in that game, told RTP that Ronaldo is Portugal's best ever player and things "will certainly end in the best way." Nuno Mendes also said any player is welcome and that if Ronaldo returns, the squad will receive him with open arms.
The team remains focused on its immediate objectives. With Nations League progression secured, the next fixture is a World Cup qualifier at home to Denmark on November 14th. Their recent form includes a 4-2 away win over Denmark at the start of October.
