The Portugal national football team is under pressure after the World Cup kickoff. With nearly nine million armchair coaches, the team needs support, not destructive criticism. The team, led by Fernando Santos, needs confidence and unity to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. Walking through the airport in Paris, I had the opportunity to watch the team's first game on the small screen of my mobile phone, which gave me a different view of the game. The players seem to be all together, more united. Maybe many should watch the team's games on their mobile phones instead of relying on the mega screens of the Fan Zones scattered throughout the cities. The championship has just begun and we already have nearly nine million armchair coaches. Soon we will have two coaches per capita. It's not bad to have all these coaches, it's even legitimate, funny and cultural. The Portuguese have this special thing: an ego that allows them to always think they are better than the boss, better than the coach, better than the directors. The problem is when we focus on destroying more than criticizing. Criticism improves, destruction devastates. We have difficulty getting into other people's projects and assuming the results of those projects. It happens in football, but it happens in many other areas. We have a national problem with delegation. Delegating means entrusting someone and assuming the results of that trust. Other countries live the football festival. The Norwegians brought the Vikings, the Congo has the statue man, the Dutch already know what they will be. Football is, and should be, a festival — and this festival is for everyone: players, technical team and fans. The 'I told you so' addiction is a problem that affects everyone. Just open social media to see the whole country waiting to say 'I told you so'. Within companies and in social life, we have thousands of examples of people who risk everything, including things they don't understand, just to be able to say later that they were right and receive the self-label of expert. Whoever shoots everywhere will always end up hitting some. Let's give up right away that all those who criticize the team will almost inevitably be right. It will be very difficult for Portugal to win all the games and, therefore, whether it's because of the coach, Ronaldo, Vitinha, Bernardo, or whoever, whoever throws now will end up being right in some game. The probability of being eliminated somewhere is extremely high. I remember the times of Scolari, when we were about to have no reason at all, and the times of Fernando Santos, when we had no reason at all, not even in the final. So, we all have reason from the start. And if someone had something to criticize, they could have done it before the World Cup started. Now that it has started, throwing reasons is not being smart. It's playing against. The team already has a lot to worry about. It doesn't need the usual anti-fans, always against everything, just to be able to say 'I told you so'. The team needs support and confidence to overcome the challenges that lie ahead. With the unity and support of the fans, the Portugal national football team can achieve great things in the World Cup.
